Welcome to the

Old Police Station, Ulverston.

Built in 1881, Ulverston’s Old Police Station is one of the area’s most distinctive buildings, and is set for a spectacular renovation that will breathe new life into this unpolished gem.

Architecture, structural and civil engineering firm Building Design [Northern] (BDN) – which has offices in the town – is leading the £3.5m transformation of the stone building, which has stood derelict for more than 10 years.  We’re proud to be bringing this stunning space back into contemporary use.

The Old Police Station will undergo a tasteful restoration, to create new workspace, where BDN will be based, as well as short-stay accommodation and a food and drink destination – a new sister site for Sheepfolds Stables.  We’re on site now, and you can keep an eye on the changes right here.

The plans

Phase one

Focused on the former police station, the first phase of work will see jail cells reimagined into boutique accommodation, while the superintendent's quarters - the west wing - which was demolished prior to BDN’s acquisition of the site, will house further serviced accommodation, each apartment with its own en-suite and kitchenette space.

BDN will also relocate its team into the building, creating more jobs and opportunities for local people.

This phase of work is expected to complete by summer 2027.

Phase two

The old Courthouse will incorporate a new restaurant pavilion, with a surrounding courtyard of former garages converted into independent commercial space that is expected to attract a range of retail businesses.  Further short-stay apartments will be created in the upper floors of the building.

This phase of work is expected to begin in summer 2027 and will conclude in 2028.
